Hello All!
I am looking for information on my 3rd Great Uncle General Alfred Ward Grayson Davis (or A W G Davis). Family lore says that he and Jefferson Davis were first cousins and roomed together at West Point. His son was Runnels Davis and he was killed in war. I am looking for the military units that AWG Davis served in. I know he was captured at one point and died in 1865 as a result of his injuries that he sustained while being a POW. Any information will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Can't help with the units but I've heard claims that actually they were third cousins once removed. Whether that's any more true than the first cousin claim I do not know but felt I should include it for completeness.

I looked for him on Fold3 and couldn't find a CSR for him. Is that because he was in the Quartermaster Corps, so the personnel records would be different than someone enlisted in a regiment?

Hi. AWG Davis is also an ancestor of mine. His father was George Naylor Davis who married Harriet Bragg, daughter of Capt. Thomas Bragg and Lucy Blakemore. AWG was born 15 Oct 1806 in Lewis County, Kentucky. 29 Oct 1834 married Rachel Stuart and settled in Greenbrier County, Va. (Now West Virginia).

Their son Runnells was Capt Co B, 19th Virginia Cavalry. KIA. Never married.

Their son Charles Lewis Davis joined the 27th Virginia Inf May 1861. Served 2 years in the "Stonewall Brigade". Due to poor health he left the Stonewall Brigade and was assigned to the Quartermaster Department in South Carolina. I think his dad may have had something to do with that.

My info is at the beginning of the war, he was a major in a Va. militia outfit, was wounded in battle, captured, but was paroled due to his wounds. Later joined the Quartermaster Dept.

If you would like to see the home General Davis built with his wife Rachel in Fort Spring, West Virginia I would be happy to show it to you along with his grave and the the grave of Runnels Davis.
