Hi All: We have a family heirloom that has been in our house for decades. The family story is that it was my wife’s great, great uncles

side arm in the civil war, though further details were pretty sketchy.

I’m wondering if any one has seen this revolver before, there are no markings to identify the manufacturer, I’d like to find out more about it and determine if it is civil war era.

Thanks!

It's a Uhlinger I think. They were sold under 3 or 4 different names to try and escape the Smith and Wesson patent. But it didn't work, he got sued, and stopped production. This one's missing the loading gate and ramrod. I haven't seen one with a barrel that long before though. The 2 I have extend only about 1/2 inch past the ramrod catch.

Here are two complete Uhlingers. The bottom one is more like theone in the OP

Edit - added second Uhlinger

Welcome From THE Heart Of Dixie. Nice family heirloom. @kevikens is correct in the fact it is missing the plunger and the load gate.

What a wonderful family heirloom! Welcome from North Mississippi!

Welcome to the forums from the host of the Stonewall Jackson Forum and another fan of small pistols!

Howdy + welcome from Texas! I'm not familiar with that make of revolver. How did they think they were gonna escape the bore through patent? And did you great great uncle actually use it in the war or is it just from that era?

We are not sure. That pistol was hanging on the wall for as long as we can remember, but my wife’s grandparents did not seem to know much detail history about it, she always said it was from the war.

It got put away a few years ago. I just pulled it out of the box it was in last week. My son and I have made a project of trying to figure out the history.

I’ll post back if I figure it out, Happy Thanksgiving!
