There was a thread about this book on CWT in 2013:

https://civilwartalk.com/threads/fa...confederate-cavalry-in-the-chick.82382/page-2

How about an update? Who has read this book since the original thread and what did you think about the author's treatment of Forrest?

I have not read the book and I'm thinking about ordering a copy. My understanding is that the author was more critical of Wheeler than Forrest but Forrest did get a fair amount of criticism.

It's been awhile but I did like the book. I think Forrest was treated fairly as someone who was learning how screening and reconnaissance worked. The author was fairly critical of Wheeler but I think it was deserved in this case.

I'd agree - if there was failure in the saddle it was more Wheeler's failure than Forrest's. He made mistakes as well - it was the first time he had been in command of both infantry and cavalry, and didn't have much time to adjust. Wheeler couldn't say that. Chickamauga, though, to be fair to both cavalrymen, was one of those battles where everybody - Union and Confederate - messed up!

Thanks for bumping the other thread.

At the time, I had planned on ordering a copy myself . . . but other issues came up and I forgot all about that book.
