The Atlanta Campaign Tour (2014)

On this day in 1864, Federal and Confederate troops clash at Resaca, Georgia. This was one of the first engagements in a summer-long campaign by Federal Major General William T. Sherman to capture the Confederate city of Atlanta. The spring of 1864 saw a determined effort by the Federal government to win the war through major offensives in both the eastern and western theaters. In the east, Federal Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant took on Confederate General Robert E. Lee, while Sherman applied pressure on the Army of the Tennessee, under the command of General Joseph Johnston in the west.

For those that might want to set their DVR's ,fox news will air a special sunday night at 8:00pm on Uncle Billie and the Atlanta Campaign". From the ad for it it may be a good as W.t.Sherman said i will make georgia howl.

I just watched this episode. Lincoln shrugs Sherman at their first meeting and ends up placing him high on the list of Federal American Civil War generals.

The Battle of Kolb's Farm (Marietta, Georgia) was fought on this day in 1864. Federal forces under Major General Joseph Hooker defeated Confederate forces under Lieutenant General John Bell Hood. Hood attempted an attack on the Federal force, but poor terrain conditions led to his failure. This battle was part of the Atlanta Campaign of 1864.

The Battle of Peachtree Creek, Georgia was fought on this day in 1864. This conflict was part of the Atlanta Campaign in the American Civil War. It was the first major attack by Lt. The main armies in the conflict were the Federal Army of the Cumberland, commanded by Major General George Henry Thomas, and the Confederate Army of Tennessee commanded by Lt. General John Bell Hood. The Battle of Peachtree Creek was the first battle fought by Hood as commander of an army.

The Battle of Atlanta, Georgia was fought on this day in 1864. Continuing their summer campaign to seize the important rail and supply center of Atlanta, Federal forces commanded by Major General William T. Sherman overwhelmed and defeated Confederate forces defending the city under Lt. General John Bell Hood. Federal Major General James B. McPherson was killed during the battle. Despite the implication of finality in its name, the battle occurred midway through the campaign, and the city did not fall until September 2, 1864.

The Battle of Lovejoy's Station was fought on this day in 1864, near Lovejoy, Georgia. This battle was part of the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War. The two sides had arrived at something of a stalemate, with the Federal army half-encircling Atlanta and the Confederate defenders staying behind earthen fortifications.

Nice to see these photos at this particular time, as I am just now reading a book on the Atlanta Campaign and another on the Army of the Cumberland.

In what may be a true touch of irony, much of the Ezra Church Battlefield is now covered by the Westview Cemetery.
