Gerrit Beneker painting: 'Gettysburg'

Now that I have the item in hand, and a better scan, I wanted to edit the original post and provide a better picture, but 'edit' isn't working. Are we never allowed to edit posts here? In any case, here it is:

First, edit your print to your satisfaction using your own computer's program; next, contact by PM one of the Moderators shown on the Homepage to be on-duty; @bdtex is always helpful to me for things like that, but I'm sure others will help too. Post in the PM a copy of your edited print and ask for it to be substituted in the OP.

Thanks!

I don’t think Lee’s beard ever got that long. Pretty sure it is just a nameless veteran.

Impossible to say with certainty - the 'feel' of Lee is there in my mind, but the forensics would say 'no', as the hair is too long in the back, as you mentioned the beard is too long and his hairline never receded that much. The hat bash is also not his style, and you would think the artist could have figured that out easily enough.

If this is indeed a study, and we eventually find the 'final' painting image, we will know for sure if it was Lee or rather just an old veteran - Beneker's final paintings were often very, very detailed.

I would love to know! I would like to think it is General Lee. For some reason that just seems befitting to me. Of course, I am a bit of a romantic.
