What flag was raised over Fort Sumter after Old Glory was lowered and taken away by Major Anderson? Was it the First National (Stars 'n Bars) or some Palmetto flag?

I believe it was the Red flag of the Citadel Military Academy. That detachment had the defense of the fort.

The first flag to fly over Fort Sumter was the flag of the Palmetto Guard (aka Pvt. John Bird's flag). It was flown over the Iron Battery when the first shots were fired at Sumter by the Palmetto Guard. They being among the first to occupy the fort fallowing the Federal surrender, Pvt. Bird quickly secured the flag to a pole and raised it over the left flank parapet. The Palmetto Guard later became Co. I of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry and the flag was supposedly carried into battle at First Manassas. The flag is currently on display at Fort Sumter NM.

The Citadel "Big Red" flag was flown over Morris Island when the cadets fired on the Star of the West. Not sure if it ever flew over Sumner though.

I contacted Charleson and the ranger there told me that it was the flag of the Palmetto Guard. Aug351 is correct. Thank you one and all.
