Video Discussion 58: Joshua Chamberlain at Petersburg

Oohh! How can I resist this one?? JB, you're a man after my own heart with this topic, and I am going to dedicate my evening to watching this video (which I'm sure is splendid if JLC is the focus of the talk). Keen as beans, just hope I can make it on the day

If you guys haven't watched the video yet, I highly recommend it..... and the book. :D

Fascinating stuff! and you need to know about the tongue depressors and butterbeans. :bounce:

Watched the video a couple of days back JB, and found it very interesting. It must have required some immaculate research (more than already had been done anyway) on the part of the author, and a willingness to challenge current beliefs. I am definitely taking something away from it, but unfortunately can't bring anything to the 'chat' because I won't be available to take part. I'll look forward to seeing others thoughts when the session is shared.

Oct 9, 2017 9:28 PM - JerseyBart: In
Oct 9, 2017 9:29 PM - MaryDee: Hi!
Oct 9, 2017 9:29 PM - lelliott19: Checking on......or in as the case may be. :D
Oct 9, 2017 9:29 PM - MaryDee: Hopefully more coming?
Oct 9, 2017 9:29 PM - JerseyBart: Lol
Oct 9, 2017 9:30 PM - lelliott19: I hope so. I have to admit I watched the video but had some trouble following
Oct 9, 2017 9:30 PM - chellers: Hi Everyone! Here as a learner, not a moderator.
Oct 9, 2017 9:30 PM - JerseyBart: We've had some great crowds since school started again
Oct 9, 2017 9:30 PM - MaryDee: It's been a horrid day ever since I got up and discovered my daughter and SIL are in the midst of the Sonoma County fires! Fortunately, they're OK so far. But it has been a distraction.
Oct 9, 2017 9:31 PM - JerseyBart: Yikes but glad they are okay
Oct 9, 2017 9:32 PM - JerseyBart: The discussion was tough to follow. Seemed like he talked in circles over 1 point
Oct 9, 2017 9:32 PM - lelliott19: Mary Dee Glad to hear they are all safe.
Oct 9, 2017 9:32 PM - PeterT: Hi everyone!
Oct 9, 2017 9:32 PM - chellers: Yep, I had a hard time staying with the speaker.
Oct 9, 2017 9:32 PM - lelliott19: Hi Peter!
Oct 9, 2017 9:33 PM - MaryDee: The message was that the marker for Chamberlain's wounding is about a mile off. It appears that this is pretty definite given all the primary sources.
Oct 9, 2017 9:33 PM - MaryDee: Hi, Peter!
Oct 9, 2017 9:33 PM - JerseyBart: Chamberlain misspoke when he stated his position...got it
Oct 9, 2017 9:34 PM - lelliott19: I agree. What I found most intriguing is Dennis' method. As a surgeon, I think he approached this via the scientific method. Here is the theory and here is how I am going to prove it. Very interesting
Oct 9, 2017 9:34 PM - MaryDee: Considering the situation and the severity of his wound, it's a wonder anyone followed his directions!
Oct 9, 2017 9:34 PM - JerseyBart: He has good reason, almost dying etc
Oct 9, 2017 9:35 PM - JerseyBart: Agreed marydee
Oct 9, 2017 9:35 PM - MaryDee: And he had lots of primary sources. I have two of them (Diary of Battle and Forgotten Valor), but I didn't have time to look them up today.
Oct 9, 2017 9:36 PM - PeterT: Yes Laura. A methodical and detailed approach to prove it.
Oct 9, 2017 9:36 PM - lelliott19: His other source is the diary of Col Wm D Rutherford 3rd SC
Oct 9, 2017 9:36 PM - JerseyBart: But it does show, I think, Chamberlain may have had an issue with certain details in his remembrances
Oct 9, 2017 9:37 PM - PeterT: Which may or may not include Gettysburg JB
Oct 9, 2017 9:38 PM - JerseyBart: Yup
Oct 9, 2017 9:38 PM - MaryDee: And his biographers followed them--you'd think they would have checked other sources first, especially in light of the severity of his wound. And, dear Lord, shoving a ramrod the full width of his pelvis!
Oct 9, 2017 9:38 PM - lelliott19: Indeed. Dennis broke those recollections down one by one and seems to have proved that they were not entirely accurate based upon other primary sources.
Oct 9, 2017 9:39 PM - JerseyBart: Brb
Oct 9, 2017 9:39 PM - lelliott19: Wasnt that horrible! I found it interesting that Dennis didnt comment more on the medical aspects
Oct 9, 2017 9:40 PM - MaryDee: They weren't pertinent to the subject of where he was, except for their effect on his recollection of events.
Oct 9, 2017 9:41 PM - MaryDee: I mean he was unconscious part of the time from blood loss and certainly was in severe shock!
Oct 9, 2017 9:42 PM - JerseyBart: Back...school never ends
Oct 9, 2017 9:42 PM - JerseyBart: I was hoping that the dr would talk some more about the injury
Oct 9, 2017 9:42 PM - lelliott19: Still, youd think that being surgeon he would have offered more opinion on the impact of such a wound. Like how long after the wounding would he have remained coherent?
Oct 9, 2017 9:43 PM - JerseyBart: Petersburg certainly was brutal....60,000 casualties
Oct 9, 2017 9:43 PM - lelliott19: Wonder what additional damage that ramrod might have caused?
Oct 9, 2017 9:44 PM - PeterT: Did Chamberlain say he found the bullet himself. Pushing against his skin. Or did I mishear that?
Oct 9, 2017 9:44 PM - lelliott19: Yes Peter. He said there was a pooch of skin. And the canula....that had to have been unpleasant.
Oct 9, 2017 9:44 PM - JerseyBart: I shared the ramrod story with my classes last year...darn near killed them
Oct 9, 2017 9:44 PM - PeterT: :bounce:
Oct 9, 2017 9:45 PM - MaryDee: No, they found it after pushing the ramrod through the wound. They had already tried probes, which were too short.
Oct 9, 2017 9:45 PM - lelliott19: Thank goodness for the advances in medicine since. :nah disagree:
Oct 9, 2017 9:46 PM - JerseyBart: Yeah
Oct 9, 2017 9:46 PM - PeterT: "Now just lie still, we are are going to use this ramrod!"
Oct 9, 2017 9:46 PM - lelliott19: :hot:
Oct 9, 2017 9:47 PM - JerseyBart: Ouch
