Carrie Sheads was the principle of a young ladies seminary when the battle erupted around her house on the Chambersburg Pike. When the Lutheran Seminary, located just a few hundred yards from her home, became a hospital for the wounded of both sides, she and her students did all they could to care for the casualties that overflowed the Seminary grounds. In fact, Carrie became the ladies superintendent of the hospital. When Mathew Brady recorded his mid July panorama of the town of Gettysburg, the Sheads' house was seen front and center. This high resolution photograph can be blown up to reveal two women standing on the Chambersburg Pike right in front of the Sheads' house. To be clear, this is merely my speculation, but I can't help but wonder if one of the ladies is Carrie. Check out the detail below from Brady's photo. You see the Chambersburg Pike on which thousands of Federal soldiers retreated along followed closely by the Confederate Army just two weeks earlier. Also, John Burns' house is visible in the distance just to the right of the Sheads' roof.
