Carrie Sheads was the principle of a young ladies seminary when the battle erupted around her house on the Chambersburg Pike. When the Lutheran Seminary, located just a few hundred yards from her home, became a hospital for the wounded of both sides, she and her students did all they could to care for the casualties that overflowed the Seminary grounds. In fact, Carrie became the ladies superintendent of the hospital. When Mathew Brady recorded his mid July panorama of the town of Gettysburg, the Sheads' house was seen front and center. This high resolution photograph can be blown up to reveal two women standing on the Chambersburg Pike right in front of the Sheads' house. To be clear, this is merely my speculation, but I can't help but wonder if one of the ladies is Carrie. Check out the detail below from Brady's photo. You see the Chambersburg Pike on which thousands of Federal soldiers retreated along followed closely by the Confederate Army just two weeks earlier. Also, John Burns' house is visible in the distance just to the right of the Sheads' roof.

I'd had a shot at thinking so? It's not her seminary, although the Shead's house so could be her sisters- she had three, I think? I forget when her mother died. Or women from the home across the street- accounts say nearly all homes were hospitals ( read one woman's diary where she said red flags hung from windows if wounded were in that home ) The seminary was not in the family home- it really was " Oak Ridge Select Seminary ".

One site says Elias, her father, built Oak Ridge but that isn't true, either- it was built late 1840's, well before Carrie became teacher or principal.

If you go to Google maps and search on 331 Buford Ave. Gettysburg, PA. and look at the street view, it looks like the Sheads house is occupied - garbage cans at the curb. And the Seminary is directly across the street shielded by some trees.

Tim and Debbie Sheads live there currently, they are both retired state employees and have one of the best sutler businesses for the reenactment community, out of the building, in the rear of the home. Yes, Tim is a direct descendent, so when the house became available he bought it. There are still shells imbedded in the walls of the home.

They are truly some of the best people one would wish to meet..........

The house was located beside the Shultz House on Confederate Ave before it was burned. Carrie never taught at this location.
