Any new Civil War movies in the works?

If they make a Civil War movie that has a Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, or There will be Blood vibe I'll go see it.

What are your guys' opinion of Free State of Jones. The trailer looks good, but I heard that it was very slow.

I think the issue with making successful Civil War movies is that people prefer going to movies to have fun. The Civil War is mostly going to be pretty bleak (not in a fun way) if you represent it accurately. People would rather see Dwayne the Rock Johnson drive a muscle car through a building than see something poignant, morally ambiguous, and probably fairly grim. If you do make a fun Civil War movie, it can very easily come across as distasteful for any number of reasons.

I can imagine doing something like O Brother, Where Art Thou, where you have charming screw ups bumble their way through the war. In order to do a serious movie, you'd have to make heroes everyone likes, and villains everyone hates. No matter how you cut it, that will be hard. Plus the overseas markets which are playing ever larger roles may have little interest.

Maybe the story of Junius and Albert could be converted? Just kinda dumb down/spiff up the main characters up a bit. Cast likable leads...?

I have only seen trailers for "Men Go To Battle".....based on the trailers, the movie seems kind of goofy to me, so I am not all that enthusiastic about finding it!
Kind of is. It is currently on Netflix. Has a plot that is somewhat hard to follow. Depicts the Battle of Perryville but only a passing view really. Save an hour of your time and do something else.

I posted a while back on another thread that John Cusack is planning on making a movie about Brig General Thomas Francis Meagher.

Lucky to be a third of it on the Civil War with a fair proportion of it would be his Irish nationalist days. Some on his days in the penal colony of Tasmania after being transported. Then his Civil War service and his post civil war days. Ending with his untimely death.

Seeing as Hollywood can only make carp these days, why bother with the Civil War. Every war movie pretty much runs the same stock characters, the angry soldier, jokester, the funny one, the serious one. Glory had everyone of these characters. It was a good movie, but they can do better than that and don't even try. hell they can't make a decent western either. The only one I wanted to see this year is already out on DVD. So no hope there. I just don't waste my money on movies anymore $30. bucks for 3D plus the glasses. I'll stick to DVDs. Actually that is where most movies make money on DVD. Just like Waterworld lost all this money. In the US it did, but overseas it around $3 million, not even the rental money for the tape. All of the money is counted in the end. The real **** is the junk they are giving Oscars too. The last movie worth seeing was Hacksaw Ridge. It was worth the Blu ray price. They are making TV way better today.

I think the Siege of Vicksburg could hold promise of done from the vantage point of a civilian hiding out in caves. I think seeing movies similar to Gettysburg and Gods and Generals is over...no one seems to want to watch a pure military CW movie.

So long as it's not full of fake southern accents. Gettysburg might be a good movie, but the first time I heard a fake southern accent, I was done.

Re: O Brother Where Art Thou

I get that vibe from the two main characters of EL Doctorow's The March...Will and Arly.

I can not say the movie was not all bad, because I refused to see it. I understand the premise of the movie and I thought so little of the premise that I won't watch it.

I had a fun night going to see this with my grandsons. Sometimes you just put aside the serious side, and have fun with those you love. (They were 12 and 13, and knew from the start it was all a bit of a send-up.)
