I am completely new to this, so bear with me. I have recently purchased what was advertised as an 1853 Enfield rear sight for my original musket (typical Civil War import, Tower 1863). It looks like the correct sight, with silver solder on the underside but unfortunately, it is too small. It is 2 1/16 inches long and the "curve" is too small for my .577 rifle, as well as for my .577 Snider. It does fit my .45 cal 1887 Martini-Henry barrel perfectly, as well as my .45-70 Springfield, which tells me that it is made for a rifle of smaller caliber than the P- 1853.
The sight is graduated up to 1000 yards. On the right side is marked with a fancy but faint 2 and 3, and a deep, smaller and simple 4. There is not a 1 or 5. On the left side is a deep-struck, small 34. I would attach photos, but can't figure out how.
Does anyone have any thought on what this sight is?

Welcome, enjoy. Hard to answer without some photos to help ID. I'm not sure if you have posting photo right (I think 10 post) this early in your membership. Try a message to Richard @ucvrelics.com the moderator of the weapons forum.

Bob, There were many different variation on P53. The ones on my 1861 Tower are graduated to 800. Is the elevation tabs swagged on the bar? If will go to upload file and then select the photos from your computer the hit open the will upload so you can either go full image or depending on the photos just leave them as is.
