Favorite Civil War Art?

Mine is a painting of a main artillery regiment charging the Confederate lines at cold harbor.
Do you have the image? I have a feeling you are thinking of Troiani's "Forlorn Hope" of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery in their charge at Petersburg. They get shot up pretty badly in that one. Including my GGG-Grandfather and his brother.

Yeah, as I read the whole thread, I see that I jumped the gun. Someone else answered it way better than I had. I just have a personal connection to the event, so I chimed in. Too little, too late.

That is the one it is. The member posted it later in the thread. The image has since disappeared for some reason but I was able to determine what it was using my magic Moderator powers. :D

Tom Freeman and (more recently) Patrick O'Brien for naval subjects.
Do you own any Tom Freeman prints and/or have a favorite? I have my eye on his gallery of Civil War prints. Almost certain that I will buy one. Haven't decided which one. Have it narrowed down to 3.

I don't have any Tom Freeman prints, but I don't do much in the way of collecting generally. If I did, his work would be a priority for me.

For sentimental reasons I might get his print of Hatteras and Alabama, although it contains an error in the flags, or maybe his print of the battleship Texas, but those are both local subjects and so I'm biased. Beyond that, there's so much good stuff of his I wouldn't know where to start.

I know little about naval flags so far. What is the error?

This is one of his that I like. The Confederate crewman holding/guarding the flag intrigues me though.

Alabama is shown flying the Naval Jack (similar to the Battle Flag) that was adopted at the same time as the Second National, a few months after the battle shown in the painting. It's a small thing, really. Freeman did a really outstanding job, though, and captured that furious action better than anyone else, IMO. The painting went through several iterations, and he had to change the composition to show the ships running alongside each other. He originally had them passing on opposite courses, but that didn't happen at any point in the action.

They certainly don't seem cheap to me! You must remember that with the recession of '08 the bottom fell out of the collectibles market and that certainly includes art prints too. I was especially pleased when a couple of years ago visiting Gettysburg I found one shop on Steinwehr Ave. (Mustang - as in airplane?) that had all their prints onsale at reduced prices. I couldn't resist one I'd never been all that fond of, Troiani's 1999 Jackson is With You, largely because they had two of them at approximately $150 each, which I figured must be close to original publication price. I bought it from the shop and was able to examine it and the rest of their entire stock, so have no question as to authenticity.

I have noticed what you mean about the bottom falling out of the collectibles market in Civil War prints. Been watching about 5-6 big name artists' websites for about a year now and all have nice prints that just are not selling. I have noticed that some prints still available on the artists' websites are already selling for less than retail price on the secondary market. That is not a good sign. I think the pool of active buyers is shrinking.

I have to keep buying the same prints over and over again as the grandchildren get married and take my framed prints to their new homes. My grandsons are real enthusiasts but the most interested is my granddaughter's Iowan husband who has become interested in the family connection to Civil War combatants. It is distressing for me to see them viewing my prints as I know it will not be long before my wife commands that "we" give them the prints.

I know my pool of available wall space has shrunken dramatically, so I can't buy any more!

Good news for all of us who want them.

Can I be a grandchild? Honorary?

I'd somehow forgotten all about this interesting thread! On the subject of the collectables market for art prints, I found another one last year during my marathon April vacation that took me driving from home in Texas to Gettysburg and back via Vicksburg. Once again at The Horse Soldier of Gettysburg where twenty years previous I'd bought Don Troiani's The Boy Colonel for $350, this time I found another of his, Ranger Mosby, for only $200, plus another $15 for shipping in a rolled tube. I think it came from somebody's collection, but had evidently never been framed before I got it, though regardless what I'd said before regarding wall space, it now resides where I'd previously had one of Lee and Jackson, which had to be moved to another room!

It's not often I come across CW Balloon art. Found this on eBay. unsigned oil from the Netherlands entitled "Civil War Observation Balloon". As a balloonist, this painting captures the crispness and colors of a sunrise inflation / launch. Simply beautiful!!

Respectfully Submitted,
