So very young! Latest 9th plate

Picked up this little 9th plate! Can't believe how young looking this soldier is! He has a badge on! I can see it under a loop but doesn't show much in my photo! Badge has face of a man up toward top!

John H. Simpson : Enlisted on 9/14/1863 as a Private, age 15,On 12/14/1863 he mustered into "I" Co. TN 3rd Cavalry. POW 9/25/1864 Sulphur Branch Trestle, AL. Captured by Confederates under Nathan Bedford Forrest, sent to Cahaba prison. He survived that ordeal, exchanged in March, 1865. He was loaded onto the steamship Sultana. Survived the explosion 4/27/1865. He lived past the age of 80 and died in 1929.

James T. Rogers
15 year-old student from Rockingham Co. NC. Enlisted 5/3/1861 into Company H 13th NC Infantry. Discharged for being underage 8/1/1862.
 
It was popular for boys at home during the war to wear military uniforms. I believe Willie Lincoln had one. Sometimes the images are mistaken for underage soldiers or drummer boys so I'm always careful about ID.
Great when they have provenance like these.

@Pvt.Shattuck very true!! I have a couple of images of little boys dressed as their Soldier father! Guess one could make a collection just of those..

Gustave A. Schurmann

Enlisted and mustered into Company I 40th NY Infantry on 6/26/1861 at Yonkers, NY as a Drummer, age 13.
Mustered out on 6/26/1864. Reportedly also served as an Orderly for General Phil Kearny.
