Although I could not attend it seems like many of our forum members enjoyed meeting at Gettysburg. Any thoughts about meeting again in 2017? Where would be a great spot to meet? A lot to see in the Atlanta area.

I liked Shiloh but had to limit my time on the Battlefield. It was a balance between antique stores for my wife and battlefields for me.

I'm afraid my trip to Gettysburg in September was a once only kind of trip and for a number of reasons I won't be able to make such a trip again. All I can offer is to say that if anybody ever takes the chance to motor west and will be travelling on I-5 through Oregon and would like to take a little side trip or just need a clean restroom (hey @FarawayFriend) send me a PM and I'll do my best to display a little southern hospitality.

Doesn't that part of the South get pretty cold and rainy? :giggle:

I'd say the same back to anyone but then we'd all end up at Gettysburg again. Shiloh, please, if I can find it.

Where I live is a Mediterranean climate very similar to northeast Spain. We do get rain in the winter months but summer and fall are hot and dry with lots of sunshine. We're a leading wine region with lots of mountains and valleys. The rainy part is along the coast and in the very northwest corner west of the Cascades. If you look at a map of I-5 in Oregon you'll see that it makes a big bend to the east down in our neck of the woods and that's because there's two mountain ranges between us and the ocean. Those mountains create a rainshadow effect.

OK, back to the previously-scheduled program.

I would like to offer to lead a tour of the Battle of Collierville and sites of a few if Forrest's battles in this area. They are small battles---closer to skirmishes--- but they are close in proximity. Maybe a trip to Fort Pillow and with the help of Forrest SCV Camp, it could include the Memphis Raid.
I wouldn't expect a large response. I thought there might be 5 or 6 guys in the area who would be interested.

Contact me if you are.

As @John Winn says, the Pacific Northwest in general has a wet season and a dry season. The idea that it's always soggy is a myth we perpetuate to keep too many people from moving here! The same is true of northern California, except that their wet season is shorter. Around here (Portland area), we like to joke that summer starts July 5 and lasts until mid to late September. Actually, the rain tapers off considerably in May and June (only rains on weekends :D) and the fall rains usually don't start until mid to late October. Even the coast is dry in summer, although because of the cold ocean water, it's often cloudy and there may be some very light drizzle. Our summers are lovely! We even have Civil War reenactments out here!

I may possibly come back east for a visit this summer if my health permits, but it will be to attend a re-enactment with my eldest son (6th Ohio Cavalry). It will either be Gettysburg, July 1-3, or, more likely, Brandy Station, first week of October. Yes, I know, the big cavalry battle at Brandy Station was fought in June, but the last time the reenactment was held then, one horse died and a number of both humans and horses were hospitalized due to the heat. The hope is that October will be cooler and easier on the participants. I would rather do Gettysburg, but due to my own difficulties with heat, I think Brandy Station is more likely. Either way, I will be with my son (his transportation) so won't have to worry about not being able to rent a car.

Oregon is one of the 5 states left on my bucket list. I dont know what year we will be getting up that way but hopefully it will come to pass. Perhaps our paths will cross then.

Should you get serious send me a PM and I can provide some help in deciding where you might enjoy going and some tips. Oregon is a big place with a number of very different landscapes. I'm always available for members passing through.

Shiloh would be a GREAT one as you have Corinth as well. But I will have to check and see if I'm allowed back in the park.:bounce: If not I vote Vicksburg as you have Champions Hill and other sites with in a short drive but with so much to see at Vicksburg its a good 2 days to see, but anyway there's plenty of side trips to be had.

I am almost finished reading The 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War by Eric R. Faust. Now after reading about the 11th Michigan I want to go revisit Chickamauga.

Bump for continued discussion.

If I remember correctly there are 17 historic locations in the Chattanooga area that make up the Chickamauga and Chattanooga national park.

1. Chickamauga Battlefield
2. Missionary Ridge
3. Lookout Mountain Battlefield (Battle Above the Clouds)
4. Orchard Knob
5. Signal Point
6. 'Cracker Line' Moccasin Bend https://www.nps.gov/chch/learn/historyculture/moccasin-bend-national-archeological-district.htm
7. Wauhatchie
8. Ringgold Gap
9. Tunnel Hill
10. Rossville Gap

Those are all I can think of off the top of my head. Do you know what the other 7 are? Bridgeport? Dalton?

As @War Horse who made a phantastic quartermaster last time, started a thread about a meeting at Chickamauga in 2018 (which makes me happy personally, because I will have a chance to attend), maybe we should shift our attention there:

In 2017 you will have the chance to meet and do an exclusive tour with @Eric Wittenberg about the retreat of the ANV, which certainly will be something very special.
