@diane .... do you think this is Wm H Forrest?

It accompanied the photo on the other thread of the scouts including your kith and kin.....

Ooooh! :happy: Now you gone done it! I don't know if he'd be posing with the escort but it's not sure fire that's the escort, is it? My relations went in and out of both the escort and Bill's scouts. Wouldn't that be so cool if that group turned out to be Bill's scouts with Bill? :smile:

@diane
After John was wounded in the Mexican-American War in 1847 at the age of 18, he lived with or near his mother and stepdad, but I'm not sure exactly where they were in 1855-1856.
John Forrest was listed in the Memphis City Directory as being an artist for "Oak Gallery" and living at 394 2nd Street (I'm guessing South 2nd), in 1867 - about the time he died.

That is really interesting - I like getting the brothers filled in a little more. Art talent sure ran in the family. Willie got into the performing arts - his second wife was into that - and his dad was said to have a fine singing voice. Nobody ever heard it, though! But, as his war style often showed, dad had a love of the dramatic, too.

@DSessom

What do you think of that photo of 'an officer'? Possibilities! I was looking at the clothing in the photo of Bill - does it look to you like a modified Confederate uniform? I rather suspect it was - he died just a year before they were legal again and people would 'civilianize' them.

There really isn't enough detail to make any kind of determination. Where did it come from?

The murder of James P Travis occurred in July 1897 in Nashville TN. His beaten body was found on the edge of the Confederate camp ground at the close of the reunion. Police charged Charles Bates and David Bray with the murder. According to their theory Travis was murdered at the Centennial Hotel and then dropped at the campground two days later at 2:00 am. However they were unable to prove their case as the main witness recanted and both men were acquitted. The motive may have been robbery or a gambling dispute. (This is pieced from Nashville papers from the time.)

That's a sad tale, isn't it? Go to see your old war buddies and get beat to death. If he was with Forrest's escort, he was tough, so no wonder they had to gang up on him!

I don't know how I missed this, except for being sick back then.... good golly! These photos are totally amazing... and I've been enjoying it all day. Many thanks to all for taking the time and effort to unpuzzle the many Forrest. I only wish Larry Cockerham was here to enjoy it!

Isn't that one of Bill amazing? I think we've got all the brothers now, don't we?

This is the most interesting and informative thread I've seen on here in quite a while. Thanks to all the contributors. I wish I was able to add something interesting. Forrestry is an amazing subject.
