Louisiana State Museum, Baton Rouge

Last stop on my trip last weekend. It is in downtown Baton Rouge. The Louisiana Marathon and a music festival were both happening that morning/midday in Baton Rouge, unknown to me beforehand,so some streets and intersections were closed. However, driving in downtown Baton Rouge on any day is nothing like driving in downtown Houston. I think I ended up parking about 3 blocks further than I would've had to if nothing was going on that day. The museum is very close to the state capitol.

And finally, the pair of brass napoleons in front of the Military Science bldg. at LSU, just across the street from the south end zone of Tiger Stadium. The were presented to the University by none other than Wm. T. Sherman, pre-war superintendent of the school, after the CW. Supposedly they were used against Fort Sumter.

The Old Arsenal and museum is also located on the New Capitol grounds. The surviving powder magazine was built in 1838 and was taken over by State militia troops in Jan. 1861, prior to Louisiana secession. It was retaken by the Federals in May 1862. A very nice museum as shown in the link below:

Passed through Baton Rouge about 5 years ago. Enjoyed visiting the state capitol and grounds, but didn't see much else. Thanks to your post I want to go back. Maybe we'll get there when we return to New Orleans this spring. Fingers crossed. Love your pics!!

Thanks. I have driven through Baton Rouge on the interstate on trips to and from Florida many times since I was a kid but had not gone there specifically. It really is nice.

Nice thread. I know the problems taking pictures of exhibits in glass cases. I must have taken dozens which prove to be useless.
Yes. Aggravating to say the least.
