Monuments VA capital is no longer capital of the Confederacy

I can understand wanting to emphasize all of Virginia's 400 year history, but the fact remains that Richmond was the capital of the Southern Confederacy during the Civil War, one of the most important events in United States history, so only four years or not, that's not just a footnote. It's one of many significant events in Virginia's long history. I'm not sure what purpose is served by removing the designation, other than simply trying to erase another piece of history.

Well, it hasn't been since April 1865. For people who are not civil war buffs, that was an awful long time ago.

Do note that the change of designation only refers to the state Capitol building, designed by Thomas Jefferson ... NOT the city of Richmond. The building was not designated the Capitol of the Confederacy by NPS until 1960, at the time of the ACW Centennial. It was erected to be, and remains, the seat of government of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Once again. No history is being changed, ignored, or denied. Only one building's principal "claim to fame."

Once again, much adoo ...

may sound like a stupid question, but
was it the confederate capitol (without being designed for that)?

tell any american tourist there's a large collection of torture instrumentarium in nürnberg and get asked 'from the nazi-regime'

it is from the middle ages - tell them and they are no longer interested - they demand the horror they prepared for

---

that's not specifically american - works with everybody - i used american because i had that conversation with americans several times

It was for used for 4 years out of the past 229 to house the Confederate Congress. The change in designation in 1960 and in 2017 is basically how it will be billed for tourism purposes -- what it will be called.

okay, that is what tourist standing in front of it will think: this was jeff davis' capitol - happens here all the time; if heydrich took a pee in a house nobody is interested that it was built in 1234. don't give it to them ant they think you're hiding something.

make the marker like built in ####, (ab)used from 1860 to 1865 to serve as ... and everybody gets what s/he wants - i'd make it 'used', btw - here in germany everything was always abused

It seems as though several folks have commented without reading the article. @John Hartwell is absolutely correct in his Post #10 in this thread.

Everyone needs to take a chill pill. There's no changing, rewriting, or erasing of history going on, no rampant "PC," nothing to get upset about. Read the article before commenting.

No surprise to see Rawls's name come up in this, he is an old Confederate apologist. I agree with all the comments finding this to be stupid.

As @John Hartwell said, the change of the designation refers to the State Capitol, not the City, so frankly, I don't see anything to be angry about at all, also, I don't see how this is rewriting or erasing history.

Reminds me of a fellow who argued I was wrong, that the state capitol never moved from Richmond to Lynchburg. It moved from Richmond to Danville. Well, um, Virginia is different from the CSA. Sometimes their capitols were both in Richmond, Virginia, sometimes they weren't. It's confusing.
