I keep seeing threads that are basically Grant stinks and no he don't with a minimum of research, references and evidence.

I suppose the real question would be what are the specific questions that would be up for debate? I don't know that a "Grant: Hero or Villain" topic would go anywhere fun fast.
Yes, specificity is the key. A suggestion: Did Grant, or did he not, eat kittens with ketchup?
By 1875 maybe.Okay ... would the Union have prevailed had Grant not existed?
Formal debate, could we make it a semi formal debate? A gentleman wears a white bow tie with his tuxedo to anything formal but is allowed to wear a black bow tie to a semi formal event/meal if the event/meal starts before 7 PM and I have some how misplaced my white tie. If you would make it an informal debate then I can wear a white informal dress shirt, with buttons instead of studs, under my tuxedo jacket, but a black bow tie is still required. We could do informal before 7 PM in which case a gentleman may wear a conservative black suit and four-in-hand tie, sorry no sport jackets allowed. Ladies can also wear knee length tea dresses instead of ankle length fromal dresses to any informal event.
Formal Debate Format.I have never been in one of these before so if you wouldn't mind giving me the rules I would like to be in grant was one of my heroes thank you.
I don't know, I'd say that title should probably go to Little Mac or Halleck.Grant, The Union true worrier
Yes. This would be a great topic."Was Grant's decision to accompany the Army of the Potomac counterproductive?" sounds like an interesting semi-formal debate.
I suppose I'd be up for it, though it would depend on the topic that we would pick. Preferably something like "Grant: Did he prefer Jameson or Vodka while blunderingly capturing Rebel Armies?"
Whew! That's a relief! As long as no other member can see a member of the debate, any attire is acceptable.
