A Civil War Postscript

"Two years earlier, a Mr. Whitbread was taken from his home in Stone County by bushwhackers. His friends, believing him murdered, searched in vain for the body. Recently, his body had been found about a mile from his home suspended from a tree limb. Putrefaction had not taken place, but the flesh had dried, retaining to some extent the outline of his face which enabled his friends to identify him even after hanging for two years by the neck."

Curious if I could find any more information, I did a web search and the first result that came up was a thread on another forum with the title "Is M. Whitbread still hanging around here???" and a preview that includes "...Has anyone heard from Mr Whitbread again lost in the woods..."

Ok, that's just too creepy for me. :cold:

One of my favorite scenes in "Ride With The Devil" shows Jake explaining the benefit of having his finger tip shot off. He explains that if a Jayhawker ever hangs him, someone will come along months later and look at him as a "gob of goo hangin' there" and then they'll see the finger. They'll say: "Why, that's nubbin-fingered Jake Roedel" and then his father can have some peace, knowing what happened to him. Sorry for the hijack, Jim, but I couldn't resist.
