AMERICUS — The Alexander H. Stephens Camp 78, Sons of Confederate Veterans, sponsors the annual Confederate Memorial Day Service in Americus at 5 p.m. April 25 in the Confederate plot of Oak Grove Cemetery. The public is invited. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the American Legion Hall on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Americus.

It warms my heart each time I hear of an event that honors veterans who participated in any war involving our country, especially the Civil War. These valiant men deserve immortality in the pages of our National Heritage as "Freedom is not free, but comes at a dear price". Thank these soldiers when you think of one of your many "Freedoms" as some made their final sacrifice to help earn that freedom for you and generations to come. I applaud the Sons of Confederate Veterans in keeping the history these warriors created alive! It is ironic, however, the service is scheduled on that particular Boulevard in the event of inclement weather. I hope the turn-out is stellar and citizens take a piece of Civil War interest and respect home with them.

To the people in the South, the Civil War is still an important event. To most in the North it it is just another part of history, which most have no emotional involvement.
You may be correct about the casual emotion from some Northerners...but not all. My heartstrings are tugged by deeds of both Yankees and Confederates. Some of my favorite and respected Civil War participants are Confederate Officers. To these soldiers, I pass no judgement or political partisanship since I respect the bravery and valor of all who were involved in the "recent unpleasantness".

I used the word "most" after having lived in the North for several years and interacting with people about our national history.
I can only speak of my own experience and in reenactments.
