Great story, Ted.
If you don't mind my asking, are you living in West Virginia or Virginia? Forest Hill, where I took these pictures, is in Wv, not far from the Virginia border.Mike Foster was my 4th great uncle. I'm so proud to be related to such a brave man!
Thank you all for your pictures, info., and input.
If you find anymore pictures of Mike Foster, please post them as I would be interested in seeing them. Thanks TedDoes anyone know of any pictures of Mike Foster? I have only seen one which is in 27th VA INF. It is a cropped picture showing the head and shoulders. There is a larger version of it showing Mike seated beside a table which is at: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=43239599 I've been trying to find where it came from to add it to my library.
The larger picture is similar to some of the pre-war pictures that were taken by many enlistees but he is not carrying a gun or a knife like most of the pre-war photos. His jacket looks like a uniform with the military insignia removed so it may be a post-war photo.
There is also a picture of veterans attending the dedication of the Foster monument in 1907 in the West Virginia Archives at: http://wvhistoryonview.org/cgi/i/im...il;cc=wvcp;entryid=x-039229;viewid=039229.JPG
I promised 16th Va I would get some pictures of the Mike Foster resting place in Forrest Hill, WV as it is close to where I live in Pipestem. Hope no one minds I share them with the board. Ted I wish I lived closer to all of the Civil War sites--but, alas, I'm in Minnesota...
re.This thread is illustrative of this board. I personally, don't care about Mike Foster, but enough do to make a decent discussion of him, his whereabouts, his accomplishments, and his resting place.
That's just me. I am gratified to see that others find things interesting that I don't. In the supermarket, I rarely buy aparagas and never eggplant or squash. Others do. This is a supermarket board. Pick and choose. Most everything is here.
And it can get finer. I like liver and bacon and onions. My wife has to be out of town before I can indulge, and then only in the summer when I can vacate the smell.
We get along just fine. And, this board and it's various forums and thread can, as well. All it takes is a little give and take. And a willingness to not get offended at little things.
I'll suspect that many, if not most, have experienced what I'm talking about. Yes, we have some younger members who have not, but they will.
One has to go along to get along. This is a debating society; not a catfight over who wins the tabby.
Hope no one minds? Outstanding pictures. Love seeing pics like that posted on this site.I promised 16th Va I would get some pictures of the Mike Foster resting place in Forrest Hill, WV as it is close to where I live in Pipestem. Hope no one minds I share them with the board. Ted

Thanks Ole and Jerry. I never went anywhere. I always check in on this site every day. I just don't spend as much time on the computer as I once did. Been doing a lot of stargazing with my new telescope and hanging out with friends and family. Im getting this retirement thing down pretty good now.Seconded, Jerry. I miss Ted.
Madison Foster and Catherine Filenger. They are buried in the same church cemetery where Mike is buried. He also had 10 brothers and sisters.Does anyone know the names of Mikes parents .
