Surgeon Florence M. Cornyn operated at Shiloh. So that's not unusual....except he wasn't operating on wounded Federals. He evidently operated a 64-pound Howitzer! Or as @redbob points out - probably a 24-pound Howitzer?

"General Hulburt [sic;Hurlbut] has discovered one of Matteson's six 64-pound Howitzers abandoned and called on a man nearby to work it. He did so, and fired and sighted it sixty-five times, mowing down the enemy terribly every fire. The man was Dr. Corning of St. Louis, surgeon, and inexperienced in artillery practice. Gen. Hurlburt thought him an old artillery officer."...

In August 1864, President Lincoln narrowly missed being assassinated. What did the sniper hit instead of the president?

Hi all,
After some basic research for a while (it never seems to be enough) I took a dip in Confederate arms land and picked up a super salty example of an 1862 dated Richmond Arsenal rifled musket. All the pieces support it being a whole and original early (Jan through March?) 1862 production date -- iron nosecap with screw, swelled shank ramrod, high hump lock, non brass buttcap. I think it's a Type 2 lock (i've seen them referred to Type 3) that's been ground down to make access to the hammer easier to load a cap. There are obvious grinding marks on the top of the lock where the high hump used to be. It's got the Richmond, VA and CS roll stamps on it.

Although I'm pretty sure all...

Mission Statement

CivilWarTalk is a forum for students and fans of the American Civil War. Our online community of Historians, Skirmishers, Re-enactors, Educators, and Enthusiasts is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and information related to the War Between the States. Our goal is to become the leading resource for every researcher seeking historical information and opinions relating to the American Civil War.

The American Civil War

The American Civil War, arguably the most traumatic event in the history of the United States, was fought from 1861 to 1865, and was the culmination of sectional issues which deeply divided the country between a pro-Federal government North and a pro-states rights, in the pro-slavery South, whose eleven states formed a breakaway government called the Confederate States of America. The costliest war in terms of human lives, the American Civil War claimed in excess of 620,000 battle or disease-related deaths - roughly two percent of the country's total population, and nearly more deaths than all other American wars combined.
