On Sunday July 23, 2023 Donna and I stumbled into what for me amounts to the fulfillment of a decades worth of research. Let me explain.

Donna and I decided at the last minute to take a long weekend in Blue Ridge, Ga. We rented a cabin and off we went. Our GPS took us right into downtown Atlanta. 6 lanes of pure hell. We decided we would take a different route home. (BTW Blue Ridge is a beautiful mountain town. I highly recommend it). The route we chose was a beautiful mountainous drive through northern Georgia. We were thoroughly enjoying our country ride home. Small towns and two lane roads through the most beautiful mountainous...

Meredith reforms in Herbst woods. Stone and Biddle deploy around 11 a.m. Cutler, with Meredith's 6th Wisconsin, returns to the front and extends the right flank. Four guns of Calef's Battery A, 2nd U.S. are ordered up again; Battery L, 1st New York advances as support. Toward noon, Rodes' division arrives on Oak Hill; two batteries placed there prepare to enfilade Union First Corps units west of Seminary Ridge. Map shows positions at noon, July 1.

"[Brigadier] General [Solomon] Meredith … directed me to place my regiment in the grove on the right of the Second [Wisconsin]. I took the position indicated, my right resting on the open fields, and threw out skirmishers to...

BLUF - I suspect this may have been written by Charles W Semmes, 1st Sergeant Brander's Company, Virginia Light Artillery (Letcher Artillery).

The letter and address block

Found by the OP in Temora (Ellicot City MD), while helping a friend clean out when he was a teenager in the 1970s (probably right before being placed on the historic register in 1976).

Mission Statement

CivilWarTalk is a forum for students and fans of the American Civil War. Our online community of Historians, Skirmishers, Re-enactors, Educators, and Enthusiasts is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and information related to the War Between the States. Our goal is to become the leading resource for every researcher seeking historical information and opinions relating to the American Civil War.

The American Civil War

The American Civil War, arguably the most traumatic event in the history of the United States, was fought from 1861 to 1865, and was the culmination of sectional issues which deeply divided the country between a pro-Federal government North and a pro-states rights, in the pro-slavery South, whose eleven states formed a breakaway government called the Confederate States of America. The costliest war in terms of human lives, the American Civil War claimed in excess of 620,000 battle or disease-related deaths - roughly two percent of the country's total population, and nearly more deaths than all other American wars combined.
