With some brief cooperation from the weather and a clear schedule for once, I kitted up and made a pilgrimage of sorts to Petersburg. There, I walked amongst hallowed ground, quietly paying respect to those who died too young, and to honor their history.

I visited the reconstructed earthworks, big shoutout to the boys with the Corps of engineers. They maintain that section fairly well.

I visited several of the major batteries, before ending at the crater, where i payed respects to both sides, and briefly visited mahones monument, in which the 12th VA was assigned to for the craters counterattack.

Not much has changed from my initial posting and showing of my kit. For some of my...
Fredericksburg visit

Fredericksburg was my first stop on my Civil War journey. I really liked how they valued their CW history and make visitors welcome there. There is a Visitor Center right in the downtown that will set you up with all the information you can handle. There is a downtown walking tour that goes into the CW fighting on the city streets. I will try to do that another time. Fredericksburg was so welcoming I would go back there again.
I stumbled onto the Slaughter Pen while wandering around during a GPS loss. It would have been great to walk it, but there were no mileages posted and it was HOT. The Civil War Trails sign had fallen down.
The lady at the Spotsylvania Visitor Center said people...

Mission Statement

CivilWarTalk is a forum for students and fans of the American Civil War. Our online community of Historians, Skirmishers, Re-enactors, Educators, and Enthusiasts is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and information related to the War Between the States. Our goal is to become the leading resource for every researcher seeking historical information and opinions relating to the American Civil War.

The American Civil War

The American Civil War, arguably the most traumatic event in the history of the United States, was fought from 1861 to 1865, and was the culmination of sectional issues which deeply divided the country between a pro-Federal government North and a pro-states rights, in the pro-slavery South, whose eleven states formed a breakaway government called the Confederate States of America. The costliest war in terms of human lives, the American Civil War claimed in excess of 620,000 battle or disease-related deaths - roughly two percent of the country's total population, and nearly more deaths than all other American wars combined.
