The 17th Connecticut charges to the woods while the 153rd Pennsylvania, 25th Ohio and 75th Ohio fall back in front of Gordon's right. The 107th Ohio belatedly begins to deploy. Doles now orders his brigade forward. Map depicts developments at 3:15 p.m., July 1.

"An effort was here made by the enemy to change his front and check our advance, but the effort failed" – Brigadier General John B. Gordon.

"They were going slowly and fighting back" – 5th Sergeant Hezekiah Roberts, Company C, 61st Georgia.

"They were harder to drive than we had ever known before. Men were being mown down in great numbers on both sides" – Private George W. Nichols, Company D, 61st Georgia...

Gordon sends a courier to notify Doles of his arrival to the east. After a brief halt, Gordon advances about 3 p.m. toward Rock Creek with five of his six regiments. Barlow's two brigades (Von Gilsa and Ames) remain focused on the threat to the northwest and are largely unaware of Gordon's approach owing to trees and vegetation along the creek. Doles awaits a conjunction with Gordon before attacking. Kryzanowski's 82nd Ohio falls back on the left of the brigade. Ames orders four skirmish companies of the 17th Connecticut back from the Josiah Benner farm. Map depicts the situation at 3:05 p.m., July 1.

"About 3 p.m. I was ordered to move my brigade forward to the support of Major...
Iverson’s Brigade Approaches Oak Ridge on July 1

Iverson's North Carolina brigade advanced, shifting eastward, but their commander remained behind. Men from Stone's 143rd Pennsylvania along the Chambersburg Pike fired at them from an extremely long range, with little or no apparent effect. Baxter's right regiments prepared to receive Iverson by changing front and moving up behind a low stone wall on Oak Ridge that was hidden from view from the west by fields of timothy grass and wheat. O'Neal's front line was augmented by the 5th Alabama, but the 3rd Alabama was detached to join Daniel's advance at the right rear of Iverson. Maps show the situation at 2 p.m.

"We [5th Alabama] came up with the brigade … at a fence where it...

Around noon on July 1, two Confederate artillery batteries attached to Major General Robert Rodes' division took position on the west slope of Oak Hill and opened fire on Federal lines to the south. A third battery under Captain Robert C. M. Page initially took position at the eastern foot of the hill but was compelled to fall back after sustaining heavy losses from Eleventh Corps artillery and skirmishers of Brigadier General Alexander Schimmelpfennig's 45th New York. At least one, perhaps two, sharpshooter battalions from Rodes' division were deployed near the Mummasburg road. Brigadier General Henry Baxter's Federal brigade was ordered northward along Oak Ridge. The 97th New York and...

Mission Statement

CivilWarTalk is a forum for students and fans of the American Civil War. Our online community of Historians, Skirmishers, Re-enactors, Educators, and Enthusiasts is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and information related to the War Between the States. Our goal is to become the leading resource for every researcher seeking historical information and opinions relating to the American Civil War.

The American Civil War

The American Civil War, arguably the most traumatic event in the history of the United States, was fought from 1861 to 1865, and was the culmination of sectional issues which deeply divided the country between a pro-Federal government North and a pro-states rights, in the pro-slavery South, whose eleven states formed a breakaway government called the Confederate States of America. The costliest war in terms of human lives, the American Civil War claimed in excess of 620,000 battle or disease-related deaths - roughly two percent of the country's total population, and nearly more deaths than all other American wars combined.
