On the early afternoon of Feb. 29, 1864, people throughout Charlottesville were startled by the sound of cannon fire, explosions and small-arms fire just north of town.

Most would have realized quickly that the thunder of battle could mean just one thing: The Yankees were coming, and only a few hundred Confederate artillerymen stood in their way.
