I am doing some research on an ancestor of mine. His name was William Anderson Johnson. He had at least one brother for sure who served with the 1 Alabama Cavalry US named Jacob Cloer Johnson. I also think he had another brother James Johnson who served in the 1 Alabama Cavalry US also. Both men's records show that they deserted.

I am sure it was hard being in a US Regiment and being from Alabama. Jacob Cloer Johnson deserted from Memphis, Tenn. The man I think was his brother, James Johnson was on a recruiting endeavor in Alabama when he deserted.

Ok, now, on to William Anderson Johnson. This is William

I have seen him as having served with the 38th Alabama Infantry and also with the 1 Alabama Cavalry US. What I have heard was that he was a 4th Sgt. in the 38th Alabama and resigned his commission and in May and then joined the 1 Alabama Cav. in August.

I am looking for ANY info on William Anderson Johnson, or his brothers for that matter.

Does the photo above appear to be while he was in a Confederate Uniform? It does to me but I am not an expert on uniforms.

The following names are seen in the files of 1st Alabama Cav (US) and their approx age.

Jacob C. Johnson -35

James Johnson - 25
James P. Johnson - 19
James W. Johnson - 19

Four William Johnson - ages 18, 19, 21, & unknown
Enlistment dates: Dec 1862, Nov 1863, Mar 1864, Last Unknown---no date but deserted April 1863?

Do you know if any were KIA or WIA? May help identify which is the correct one.

Now for 38 Alabama Infantry. There was no Union infantry regiment.

Checking 38 Alabama Inantry(CS)
4th Sgt William A. Johnson, Enlisted from Fayette Co.
Appeared on List of Medical Board dated Nov. 25, 1863
Number of days(sick?) 40
Disability : Chronic diarrhea, 6 months great emunciation
Only a few records on him.

Is it possible that William Johnson changed to Union after his sickness? There is only one William Johnson in US 1 AL Cav who had an enlistment date that followed his last Confederate date.

Let me know if you want to look at records for any of these. What was William's age?
