Video Discussion 30: The Final Fourteen Days of Abraham Lincoln

As mentioned, I'll be missing the next two Mondays. Leaving early in the a.m. to visit my daughter in California. I'll watch videos and read transcripts when I get home!

The picture above alone is worth watching a while. So many mini-portraits! I think it is very flattering to Mary Todd Lincoln, she must have been a lot shorter than the picture makes her ... does anybody know more about the painting, or is it explained in the video? Who is the gentleman on the right hand side, talking to a lady in red? He looks like some sort of daredevil, a northern Rhett Butler ...
I hope to be able to watch the video before the discussion, which means I will have to do that this evening. It's always better to know what you were talking about before reading the transcript. Thanks for presenting us another very interesting video @JerseyBart , I hope it will become a lively discussion again, there are many of us who are fascinated by Lincoln. And these 14 days were indeed probably the most important 14 days in the history of your country!

Apr 18, 2016 10:07 PM - PeterT: I thought it was terrific
Apr 18, 2016 10:08 PM - PeterT: The first time he used the Abe voice. I thought "OK?". But then I got used to it and ended up liking it.
Apr 18, 2016 10:08 PM - Northern Light: I love the special vocal effects. :giggle:
Apr 18, 2016 10:08 PM - JerseyBart: It's funny how non-gloating Lincoln was in victory, in ?Richmond, speaking at the white house
Apr 18, 2016 10:08 PM - Northern Light: I know what you mean Peter!
Apr 18, 2016 10:08 PM - PeterT: My admiration for Lincoln has been enhanced by this video.
Apr 18, 2016 10:09 PM - JerseyBart: Those voices were awful.
Apr 18, 2016 10:09 PM - JerseyBart: Lincoln just wanted his country back together.
Apr 18, 2016 10:09 PM - Northern Light: Mine too! he was so gracious in victory, and so humble
Apr 18, 2016 10:10 PM - Northern Light: Too bad he couldn't have seen it together longer.
Apr 18, 2016 10:10 PM - JerseyBart: To the anger of his supporters and employees no less
Apr 18, 2016 10:11 PM - Northern Light: He must have been a trial to them, as they were to him.
Apr 18, 2016 10:11 PM - PeterT: I bet reconstruction would have been better under him
Apr 18, 2016 10:12 PM - JerseyBart: Very much do Peter
Apr 18, 2016 10:12 PM - JerseyBart: So, not do
Apr 18, 2016 10:13 PM - Northern Light: No doubt! if he had served his term and then been followed by Grant, it might have been a whole different ball of wax.
Apr 18, 2016 10:13 PM - PeterT: Let's talk about Mary. Holy moly what a complex character. Abe was a saint to put up with her.
Apr 18, 2016 10:14 PM - JerseyBart: She was on him for being so polite to the defeated confederacy.
Apr 18, 2016 10:15 PM - Northern Light: Since JPK isn't here tojump on me I can say she was a little bit crackers by this time. The thing with the boats was bizzarre.
Apr 18, 2016 10:15 PM - PeterT: "Move that boat. I won't cross on Mrs Grant's boat".
Apr 18, 2016 10:16 PM - Northern Light: She and julia were not exactly BFF, that for sure.
Apr 18, 2016 10:17 PM - PeterT: Did Mary slap Stanton on the face? Did I hear that correctly?
Apr 18, 2016 10:17 PM - Northern Light: Julia did her best to avoid her as much as possible, and most of the other generals wives were leary of her.
Apr 18, 2016 10:18 PM - Northern Light: I wouldn't be surprised by that.
Apr 18, 2016 10:18 PM - JerseyBart: And that the ladies loved Abe didn't help.
Apr 18, 2016 10:19 PM - Northern Light: I think he was one of those men that women like, because they know he's not coming on to them, no threat.
Apr 18, 2016 10:20 PM - Northern Light: That and he had a wicked sense of humour.
Apr 18, 2016 10:20 PM - PeterT: Yes JB. That was hilarious. He was seen in the company of another woman! OMG.
Apr 18, 2016 10:20 PM - JerseyBart: Tsk, tsk.
Apr 18, 2016 10:21 PM - Northern Light: And she picks a fight in front of the whole freaking army. That is not normal behaviour.
Apr 18, 2016 10:22 PM - PeterT: I suppose if someone said to Abe that his wife is a fruitcake. That would not go down well.
Apr 18, 2016 10:23 PM - PeterT: He would say "well we all have our foibles or follies"
Apr 18, 2016 10:23 PM - JerseyBart: This brought me back the nps televised memorial service and reenactment for the 150th last year...very emotional
Apr 18, 2016 10:23 PM - Northern Light: I thought it was interesting how he reacted to sitting in Davis' chair. Most men would have been whooping it up! But not Abe.
Apr 18, 2016 10:24 PM - JerseyBart: No gloating, just reality.
Apr 18, 2016 10:26 PM - Northern Light: It wust have been a really deep moment for him after 4 long years. To realize that it was almost all over.
Apr 18, 2016 10:26 PM - Northern Light: Must.
Apr 18, 2016 10:26 PM - JerseyBart: In more ways than one
Apr 18, 2016 10:27 PM - Northern Light: All the pain and worry and suffering almost done. the prize almost won.
