At Harper's Ferry the Provost Marshal wanted me to take the loyalty oath. I assured that I was a Union man and that I always carried a portrait of our beloved president about my person. He looked puzzled until I produced a penny. He said that was not good enough. Darn. Somewhere among my papers is my loyalty oath signed by the Provost.
