Time to muster the troops again....

I have visited Farnsworth House on a few occasions (love the drinks, the people and Gettysburg on loop), but I have never ventured into the Mine. I did spot it on my visit last year. I'll have to stop there on my next visit.

Where is Oroarks? Would love to add it to my list too.

I believe he was referring to O'Rorke's and the Reliance Mine Saloon.

Difficult subject in protecting the battlefield and at the same time promoting commerce. But treating of the entire battlefield as a Cemetery should take precedence over commerce. Pa has many interstates and rural land for development. Gettysburg and the nearby Amish country draw in many visitors. Somewhere in between those two tourists areas sounds like a good spot to me.

I spelled it incorrectly. It's O'Rorke's and its directly across the street from the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg. There address is 44 Steinwehr Ave, Gettysburg, PA 17325. Phone # 717-334-2333. Another must stop. You'll love it.

I'm replying to this thread because I disagree with the OP; this is common behavior on forums. Am I too beg your permission to participate or bound to fall in step with others?

Look here, people visit historical sites because it amuses them to do so. Call the enjoyment given what you like but it still boils down to amusement.
I like many here on this forum consider Gettysburg hallowed ground. A place to remember the supreme sacrifice made by participants on both sides. A place to honor, respect and learn from our history. I doubt a single WWII veteran, or a single one of their descendants that ever returned to the beaches of Normandy, went there for amusment. Places like these are living monuments that bear witness to the sacrafice, horror, bravery, honor, and brotherhood that happened in these places. ***edited by moderator jgg***I am willing to help as well.

And I still stand by my notion that people do things because they enjoy doing them; whether or not this is amusement is quibbling over definition. I think it's fun to visit historical sites--fun--understand? I think most people who love history think history is fun. To think your noble reasons for going there apply to all is...just plain stupid. So get off your high horse.

Listen buster, I've already thrown in the towel on this issue. Jumping on my case is now unseemly.

And I still stand by my notion that people do things because they enjoy doing them; whether or not this is amusement is quibbling over definition. And if we define amusement simply as fun some people are going there for that reason, as is obvious reading this forum. To think your noble reasons for going there apply to all is...just plain stupid. So get off your high horse.

Steinwehre ave, Check out Google maps Gettysburg, close up view for orientation, please pop into the Mine and say hi to Kim

Those particular stores happen to be failing all over, and will probably go out of business nationwide in another year or two. The Portland (OR) area has a vibrant economy, but those particular stores are closing here, too.

And what I should have said is that there are quite a few open retail spots throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area-my fault for not doing that. I just mentioned the biggest, obvious ones. The mall hasn't had this much open space in the time I've been here, and that is 30 years. Manufacturing, what there is of it, seems to be holding steady-no one has announced any layoffs (yet, anyway). North Dakota's budget has taken a huge hit with the drop of oil prices and ag prices. North Dakota State University has offered and had about 70 early retirements accepted from the offers they made-and those people won't be replaced. As I said, no one is going to build a casino to replace these jobs. I hope the economy in the Gettysburg area is good.

Read in the paper today about Thursday's meeting and figured I'd give an update. According to the Gettysburg Times, the Freedom Township Board of Supervisors delayed action on the harness track after having no second for the matter to move on to the planning commission. Instead the developers were asked to provide more details and a site plan.

I just read the OP now and skimmed most of the replies (sorry to not give them the attention they deserve, but planning for an assault later today on my home by a mob of hungry teenagers). Whatever can be done to help support the cause of preservation, I'm in. Please let me know if you hear of specific fundraising needs!
