I know that both the Union and the Confederacy mounted cannons on armored rail cars, often just thick timber but some with iron plating. These armored rail cars were a bit like tanks. I was wondering if this was common in the Crimean War and before. Does anyone have a good source for the pre Civil War development of this style of artillery?
