156 years ago today, December 20, South Carolina voted to secede from the United States. I found this map on county by county secession votes in the South, and if nothing else, it shows why West Virginia came into existence! The enclaves of Union sentiment in the South stand out... I had no idea north Alabama was a big Union region, but I do note that a lot of the "against secession" counties look like they're in the Applachians, so maybe that population had Union sentiment in common.
