When Gen. William T. Sherman made the remark that “war is hell,” he was not making a joke. An old Lancaster News article given to me by Dew James, formerly of the Morning News, is evidence that the statement by Sherman was correct.
Apparently, a picture of a grave marker east of Pageland in Chesterfield County drew comments from historians about the death of a Confederate soldier, and historians painted the following picture:
