Found this ambrotype of what is supposedly Pvt. Charles H. Ruff of the 2nd Texas Infantry.

So, I was wondering if anyone could uncover any further information on Pvt. Ruff. This is the only image of a private in the 2nd Texas Infantry that I am aware of. Thanks

Edit: I see that on LoC it had been changed from "C. W. Ruff" to "Charles H. Ruff of Co. G, F, and S."

I am seeing the same photo posted as Charles H. Ruff.

Charles H. Ruff of Beaumont was apparently conscripted sometime in 1862, he was in a Conscript Camp on the Gulf Coast & enlisted in the2nd Texas on 28 OCT 1862 in Jan of 1863 he transferred to the 2nd Texas Co G. He served in the siege of Vicksburg and was paroled 07 JUL 1863, came back to Texas and rejoined the reconstituted 2nd Texas where he was made an acting Commissary Sgt of Co G in NOV 1863. Promoted to Commissary Sgt in Jan 1864 he transferred to the regimental NCO staff. Transferred to Brigade staff in Houston in March 1864 he applied for and received a Captains position and Asst Quartermaster in April 1864. Last records for him are dated March 1865 LOC

I noticed there was a Charles H. Ruff here, wasn't sure if that was actually the man in the photo, a relative or what. LoC probably just got the name wrong.

Interesting to me because my ancestors were in the Second Texas, but I have never seen a photo of a Second Texas soldier in uniform before this. Thanks very much for posting, I will share this with my family members.

Although I don't see any mention of Ruff in the roster of Company G, in Joe Chance's book on the 2nd Texas, it may be that he was conscripted in at a later date, so he doesn't appear in the initial roster, but was there later at the siege of Vicksburg.

His documents on fold3 include a couple of handwritten letters by him, mainly about his commission. He looks really young to be in charge of provisioning an entire regiment, as another document states!

There is a Charles A. Ruff, Co. G, Second Tennessee Regiment, shown as a paroled soldier at the end of the siege of Vicksburg. ( See records of paroled soldiers at Vicksburg N.M.P. website) I wonder if the State regiment designation was written in cursive handwriting originally, and got mixed up as meaning "Texas"? Could this man be actually a Second Tennesse man?

Possibly, though I don't see a 2nd Tennessee regiment in the Siege of Vicksburg order of battle. The only two CS 2nd Tennessee Infantry regiments I am aware of are Bate's 2nd Tennessee and Smith's 2nd Tennessee (5th Confederate Inf.), and both served in the AoT throughout the war. I'm not seeing a 2nd Tennessee Cavalry in the Siege of Vicksburg order of battle either.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. You probably won't see the 7th TN Cav in the order of battle either but two companies were there as escorts and couriers - scads of original paperwork to prove it.

I was specifically talking about the siege order of battle, but neither of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry regiments ever went to Mississippi in 1863, not even to join Johnston's Army of Relief. They were in Cleburne's Division at the time, which remained in the AoT throughout 1863.
