"Born in December of 1841 in Anson County, North Carolina, Mask and his family moved to Mississippi when he was four years old. On February 25, 1862 at the age of 22, mask enlisted in the Confederate Army. During the Battle of South Mountain Mask and the 2nd Mississippi were ordered to Fox's Gap in order to maintain it's control, arriving at the gap at about 5 p.m. With nightfall came the order to retire back to the vicinity of Turner's Gap. Leaving the battle of south Mountain unharmed, mask was wounded three days later during the Battle of Antietam. Upon recovery, he continued to fight with the regiment until being wounded again during the Battle of the Wilderness. returning once more to active duty, mask was wounded a third time during the Battle of Fort Archer on October 1, 1864. he remained in the hospital for several months before rejoining his regiment just before the Confederate army's surrender."
