I was just reading an interview with Eric Foner in which he was asked what set South Carolina apart from the other Southern states, and one thing he mentioned that didn't sound right to me was that in prewar South Carolina the majority of families owned slaves. I know that the percentage was highest in South Carolina, but a majority ? Naturally, it being an interview, there were no sources cited. Anyone have any thoughts on the statement ? I am generally a fan of Mr. Foner's work, but this seems off to me.
Here is the interview http://www.salon.com/2015/06/24/the...r_on_the_past_and_present_of_white_supremacy/

Note to moderators: This interview is in connection to recent events so if you'd rather this thread be put on hold, I understand. My question is not related to any current controversy though.
