Personally, I like the look of a patchbox which I always thought was a very handy place for a spare cone and wrench, etc. Speaking generally, the feeling at the time was that it was not a feature of the apex European military arms and its inclusion represented an unnecessary expense. The nice big, brass patchbox on the US 1841 rifle was always a feature I admired about them.
