Now here's a picture that is worth colorizing. Lieutenant Robert McKechnie of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry.

From New York's records:

H, May 4, 1861, to serve two years; promoted first sergeant, June 10, 1861; second lieutenant, December 22, 1861; first lieutenant, March 5, 1862; mustered out with company, May 20, 1863; commissioned second lieutenant, December 12, 1861, with rank from August 18, 1861, vice R. Generally speaking, the first 38 infantry regiments from New York enlisted for 2 years only. A couple regiments maintained their unit identities after June 1863 but most of the regiments went home and were mustered out. An interesting aspect is that many of these men would go on to reenlist in other units. For example, I've done a great deal of research on the 16th New York Infantry and many of the men that went home in May 1863 would go on to form a core for the 13th New York Cavalry while a number of others joined the 14th New York Heavy Artillery.
