The "group sizes" appear to be derived from the published trial results from 1857. Are you however confusing group size (extreme spread of the shots) with Figure of Merit?

The 1857 published test results gave a Figure of Merit (FoM) for the Whitworth rifle at 1800 yards of 11.62" - this is not the same as group size. Figure of Merit was used in the Victorian period as a means of assessing accuracy. It requires calculating the mean point of impact of a group (MPI), then measuring the distance of each shot from the MPI. The average of these measurements is the Figure of Merit.

Group size will be significantly larger than the Figure of Merit.

I consider David M (ResearchPress) to be the world expert on Whitworths.

Like JohanSteele mentioned, there is a certain point at which shooting could be distinguished between certainty of hits and for mere harassment value only. I read of two definite hits at over 1,300 yards distance (Fort Sumter to Battery Gregg on Morris Island).

Is it considered sharpshooting if artillery is involved, as with Polk?

Ha! Ha! Far from that Gary, but thanks for the compliment!!

I do have quite a lot of information on Joseph Whitworth on line and a good collection of related papers.
