Letter from a Wisconsin soldier

During the Civil War, the Wisconsin governor, Governor Harvey, drowned while visiting the Wisconsin camps after the battle of Shiloh. He was known as being incredibly generous. His wife took up charitable work afterwards and was well-loved. But I came across this letter, and it moved me to tears. I thought I'd share it with you.

Thanks very much for posting this! I'm not sure I've ever read a first hand account from someone who had encountered Cordelia- she must have been just unbelievable. Gosh. Do not read of her husband's death or you'll cry for an hour- he was a peach and it was such a tragic, sudden thing.

I did not know she had not been commemorated early on. There's nothing like letters and journals for digging up new information!

Here is one of our threads on her- hate to link one of mine, it's just that I don't have time to read through all of them.
