Before the war, they had laws against educating slaves in Georgia, didn't they?

I was trying to find out if these laws were state-wide or local, or if they were general retribution-type things. And what were the official (or unofficial) penalties were for those caught educating children?

I have a young lady down in Savannah, Georgia, who is skirting that so-called law back in 1850-something, and wanted to be clear on what she had to put up with. Or at least that aspect of it.

Thanks guys!
