I'm starting from scratch on my husband's grandfather. If I can trace his line back to ACW, I hope to spark his interest in CW.

As of now this is about all I know:

Marion Chandler Terhune

b 1899 d 1964 NY, bur NY (found him on findagrave)
mil rec WWI USMC Pvt

Would like to know anything about his tour of duty, POB, parents names etc.

m. Bertie, (Berta,Beatrice, Alberta) Jensen, b 1898 MA, d 1988 Montgomery Co NY (also findagrave)
d/o Jens Jensen

Please feel free to respond via PM.

Thanks in advance for your help and time. Will be out much today but check back in as able.

Chellers I had great uncle who served in World War I. He was from New York. I was able to get his military record from New York State Archives. You write them and request summary of service card from Albany. It cost me a $1.00 and takes about 2 to 4 weeks. It did for me. I got a lot of information on him that helped me find other information.

Fold3 has the NY Army and Navy summary of service cards. I don't find Marion Chandler Terhune listed. There were 4 Navy Terhunes (which would include ISMC, I would think -- don't know if MC cards were separate, if they were, then Fold3 doesn't have them): Guy L., Harold LaF., Richard E., and Russel. No Army Terhunes. Perhaps he was living in another state when he enlisted?

I notice that Ancestry has the USMC Muster Rolls index: lists quite a few for Marion C. Terhune. I don't have a subscription, so I can't be specific.

Hi Donna, thanks for your reply and information. I'll try contacting the New York State Archives. Just to obtain an uncertified copy of his death certificate is $22 and an eight-month wait!
Again, appreciate your reply. Very helpful.

Hi John, thanks. Thanks much for taking time to look. A few data sources show he may have been from CT. I'm encouraged at the number of Marion C. Terhunes you found on the USMC Muster Rolls index. Obviously each one warrants tracking down.
Thank you much, sir, for the leads.

I've been hunting with very little success for one of my relatives in WW1.....my dad said my grand uncle was at Belleau Wood. He couldn't remember the regiment he served in though. Researching newspaperarchives.com I came across an article from August of 1918 in the local paper stating that he was serving in the 6th Marines. An earlier article from March of that year said he was in 133 Co. Bat US Marines. Does anyone know if the Bat part is for Battalion or Battery or something else?

Chellers, if you can track down his unit, (2/5, 1/6, or whatever) I can possibly give you a brief history of that unit. Uncle Sam's Misguided Children, (I can use that term as I'm a Marine Veteran myself :dog:) fought in the Army's 2nd. Infantry Division in WWI as "The Marine Brigade". At Belleau Wood, June 1-26 1918 reversing the German's 1918 offensive along the Marne River near Château-Thierry where the 3rd. Infantry Division held and earned the title, "Rock of the Marne". The 2nd. Infantry Division consisted of Army Regulars and Marines, the 5th. and 6th. Marine regiments and a Marine Machinegun Battalion along with several artillery batteries, and engineers. The Marine Brigade fought so fiercely at Belleau Wood the French renamed the wood, "Wood of the Marine Brigade" and the Germans bestowed the title, "Hell-Hounds" (cleaned up by the press here to "Devil Dogs").

Of course there were many Marines serving aboard ships and Naval bases around the world also.

The 133rd Company was part of the Marines' 1st Replacement Battalion, which embarked for Brest, France 9 Feb. 1918, on transport Von Steuben. After training near Chatillon, the Bn. was attached to the legendary 6th Marine Regiment.
There is a very brief thread on the U.S. Militaria Forum. (not very informative). They saw a whole lot of combat, those guys -- including Belleau Wood.

This is my WWI soldier Jesse Lee Stephenson 1892-1983 He was with the 62nd Engineers in France. He was a railroad man in France.
He was Sylvester Brown Stephenson's grand nephew. Jesse Lee Stephenson was the grandson of Sylvester's brother George Alexander Stephenson.
Sylvester served with Ward's Artillery during the Civil War.
After the war, Jesse Lee Stephenson worked for the railroad until he retired. He was born in Delta County,TX and died in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
He was the conductor of the train that carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt on one of his campaign tours.

Thanks for this info! I was 10 yrs old when he passed away but remember he had a scar just above right eye where a German bullet grazed him.

Uncle Sam's Misguided Children
Hahaha, I hadn't heard that one. Thanks.

First, Old Hickory, I'd like to say thank you for your service, sir.

Thanks very much for your offer of assistance. Terhune. More unit info would be very helpful. Hubs thinks he died at the VA Hospital at or near Rochester NY. I would think their records would reflect some helpful information; if so, they should be willing to share since he died over 50 yrs ago. I will contact them and let you know what I learn. Also need to check on what WWI recs are available at NARA.

Thank you so much for your very kind offer.
