This discussion came up as a result to some posts on another thread. I thought it is better to continue the discussion here. I am going to post some links to some sites in order to get my point across. Then again, I know that I am arguing in vain, but I must protect and defend my heritage. So here we go on the merry-go-round, hold tight. I really didn't want to discuss this, but if I must, I must. I have to go somewhere in a little while, but when I get back there will be plenty of links.

It's a stereotype we can thank Hollywood for. Southerners are typically portrayed as ignorant, illiterate hillbillies. It's sad, really. A recent documentary showed that the Southern Appalachian accent was the most highly discriminated against in the job market for that very reason.

So please tell me why we are the only people you can stereotype and get by with it?

A quote from the Pink Flamingo site: If you read Time, you will discover that Southerners are stupid fat people. I guess that’s because it is the “Bible Belt” and they have a tendency to vote Republican. That’s enough to cart ‘em all off to Alcee Hastings’ proposed concentration camps and starve ‘em into submission, right?

I guess I just don't get why this is a big deal. Virtually every part of this nation has stereotypes about it. I certainly don't take it personally when I hear people make fun of New Yorkers, New Englanders, or Pennsylvanians.

Was the title of the thread written with deliberate irony? It's pretty funny.

An impression from participating in this forum is that some white southerners expend a lot of effort whining about being victims of hollywood, the media, 'yankees', etc.

I am horrified by the regularity with which American history is mangled in the interest of confirming prejudices.

Difference is we don't really mean it, they actually have the nerve to say their IQ is higher and everything else in between. I am one for joking too, but when your accent keeps you from getting a job and you live in the South something is totally wrong.

I would say that what I am finding on the internet, in the media etc....confirms the need for whining. After all any other ethnic group would be in an uproar by now.

So, you are arguing that Southerners are a persecuted group? Really?

The only Yankees I ever met growing up were on the beaches of Alabama and Florida panhandle. Most were pasty white, loud, obnoxious, wore Bermuda shorts with black socks and hard sole shoes, and had funny little straw hats -- many with a golf ball and Easter basket grass on top. They were a pretty sorry looking lot so I guess turn about is fair play.

Down here in Fl we have a saying about yankee's.

A Yankee is someone that comes down here with a five dollar bill and a pair of shorts and doesn't change either the whole time they are here.

Then there’s that old Southern adage – a Yankee tourist is worth a bale of cotton and a hellava lot easier to pick.

"If you live on the South side of Atlanta, get on I-75 and go south. If you live of the North side of Atlanta get on I-75 and go north. If you are a Yankee get on 285." (Note to all you Yankees -- I-285 is a continuous loop around the city)

Careful CSA you'll get an "infraction notice" for talking like that!

It's true that all ethnic groups and regions have been the butt of jokes at one time or other (I could certainly lay on some more yankee jokes if I wanted to) but shanniereb has a point here.

The Southern culture is the only culture and Southerners are the only ethnic group that are fair game for the otherwise "politically correct" and anyone who does not know that has their heads stuck in the sand.

I've found that the definition of "a Yankee" appears to be a local thing. I was in a bar in College Station, TX. and when I ordered the local boy sitting next to me asked where I was from. I told him I was a Virginian and he called me a Yankee. After a brief discussion he bought me a beer and all was well.

Only if those who claim to be emersed in "The Southern culture" permit themselves to feel such.
