I found the following description of Jackson, Mississippi, in The Weekly Standard (Port Gibson, Miss.) January 27, 1866:

"Since the legislature was got rid of, the citizens of Jackson seem to have waked up and gone to work in earnest to rebuild and improve their city. Several very fine buildings and a multitude of inferior ones, have been erected since my last visit, and the Capital begins to resume it old time proportions. Ever since Sherman's mission of love, and until quite recently, Jackson presented the appearance of a doll with its eyes dug out and its nose knocked off."
