"Secrets"

"Take glazed paper of different colours and cut into squares of equal size, fringing two sides of each . Have ready burnt almonds, chocolate nuts, bonbons, and sugarplums of various sorts. Put one in each paper with a folded slip containing two lines of verse. Twist the coloured paper so as entirely to conceal their contents, leaving the fringe at each end."

From: "Directions in Cookery" 1837.

"Secrets" are fun to make. They were really enjoyed by those years ago. The glazed paper may be waxed paper from the grocery, but confectioner's supply houses carry "kiss paper" already cut as well as colorful bonbon cups.
