Feb. 9th National Pizza Day

Gluten free pepperoni can be quite tasty too. I love that pizza and look forward to it every Friday, just have to get used to thinner crusts then it becomes a real favorite.

Italian pizzaiuolos (PIZZ-a-olos), pizza makers, were very proud of their craft and considered pizza artists. When word began to get around that pizza in the Naples area was exceptional, Queen Margherita of Savoia learned of it from the painters and work people that were allowed in the royal yard. She became very curious and had some delivered. She loved them. Her favorite had the colors of the new Flag of Italy, red (tomato) Green (basil) and white (mozzarella). This pizza was named Pizza Margherita by Raphelle Esposito and it became an icon among the citizens of Naples.

Pizza was imported to the United States by Italian immigrants. Lombardi's is considered by most to be the first pizzaria in the United States and it remains open today.
