What happened after Shiloh and up until after the fall of Vicksburg?
I have been reading the OR's to see how Mississippi responded to the fall of Vicksburg and began their new recruiting drive to form new cavalry units.
General Ruggles was placed in command of the Department of Mississippi and held that position until replaced by General. S. D. Lee---and they department's name was changed.
In June 1862, the Confederates launched an attack on Baton Rouge from Camp Moore, LA. I don't know if Ruggles was with them in the field but I think they were under his command. However, it is still not clear who was directing this campaign.
So I am interesting to get more details on his command.

Here is a portion of one OR from September 1862. I need to go back and review the entire 2 or 3 page report. I thought it was written by General Breckinrigde but submitted by General Ruggles.

General John Breckinridge - Division
General Charles Clark - Division
General Daniel Ruggles - Division

But who commanded Breckinridge's division? Was General Van Dorn connected in anyway?

Here's the Battle of Baton Rouge order of battle. I haven't read that book, but from what I have read it sounds like Van Dorn had ordered the recapture of Baton Rouge, but had Breckinridge placed in overall command of the force that was to recapture it. According to that order of battle, Brig. Gen. Charles Clark was in command of Breckinridge's Division.

Great info. Does that book mention any of the names of General Ruggles staff? I'm looking for reference to Lt. Henry C. Holt.
Also, is there any mention of Seemes Battery as to what types of guns it had in it?

Here is the OOB from that link. It seems he didn't proof read it. Could Colonel Moore actually command 4 different regiments.

On pg. 64, "Joining the march with Ruggles' Division was the 1st Louisiana Battery, led by the palindromic Captain Oliver J. Semmes, armed with two rifled 6-pounders and four smoothbore 6-pounders."

Actually, according to this, Capt. Semmes' Battery consisted of two 6-pounders (presumably smoothbores), two 3.67-inch rifles (20-pound Parrotts), and two "3-inch Confederate Parrott rifled cannons" (10-pounder Parrotts?).

If I find anything else on this battery I'll post it, fascinating info I've found so far.

Thanks. I had the info that Lt. Holt was appointed but may not have the date he was relieved. There are several documents in Lt. Holt's Army files that are signed or approved by Capt. Thos Dashiell.
