Can you guys please take a look at the buckle on the man standing on the left?

It seems to have an "extra piece" to the right of the main plate that is wider than the main plate? Is it my imagination or is the buckle he's wearing different? Have you ever seen a buckle like that before?

Photo is of General S.A.M. Wood and staff (previously posted http://civilwartalk.com/threads/could-it-be-a-picture-of-my-gg-grandfather.111212/ )

Hi! I've seen many different buckles on many different uniforms--the other guys in the picture have different buckles, too (from what I can see).

Thanks @IcarusPhoenix I see that now! Thanks so much! So what would the buckle have looked like? Sorry I am not really familiar with uniforms and accouterments.

actually all three men are wearing different buckels. The one on the right looks like what I call a double hook that has no buckle. You can see where the clip together or the buckle snake buckle. The one in the middle looks as there is some type emblem which could be the unit or the state mascot. I think your GG grandfather has a simple plain rectangle it my have a slightly raised CSA or CS but I can't tell. I am no buckle expert just looking that all three are different.

Here's a link to a thread you might look at to get an idea; most of the rest of them ( including Confederate ) are derived from these regulation examples:

This belt plate is likely what the man standing in the center is wearing; the "snake" buckles like the man on the right is wearing were a common British style and are often found on belts imported from England.

Thank You! I thought that right man's buckle was English! It was bugging me--thanks for the confirmation...

Does this help anyone know what was on the buckle? The eagle design or the CS? I know the buttons above and below are obscuring some of the design, but not being familiar with the designs in question, I cant really tell anything, :nah disagree: Looks like a snake to me. :bounce:

He was from Cherokee Alabama. Its a little town between Florence and Tuscumbia - in the NW corner of the state only about 15 mi from Mississippi. He originally enlisted as Surgeon in the 16th Al infantry at Courtland AL

That's obviously a rectangular buckle like the eagle plates I posted; here's the only one I found online with an Alabama design, though there may be others.
