This is Col. Stephen Moffitt of the 96th New York Regiment, and he signed the photo in
pencil. In 1864 at the battle of Fairoaks he and his regiment were in combat when he
spied one of his men badly wounded, and he tried to help the man by carrying him to
the field hospital, when he was also wounded badly in the leg. He lost the leg to
amputation, but survived. He was promoted to the rank of brevet-brigadier general
for his bravery there that day. How many high officers carried one of their wounded men
to safety? Not many.
