CARLINVILLE -- Ask current Carlinville residents about Richard Rowett, an Englishman who lived in the area from 1854 until his death in 1887, and they might remember one of two things.


According to author and historian Tom Emery, Rowett is known for establishing in the U.S. a quality bloodline for American Standard Beagles, and for a bizarre military-style funeral ceremony he performed for his Civil War horse, which was buried facing South, toward the Confederate enemy.
