Resided in Bertie County. Appointed Adjutant (2nd Lieutenant) on or about May 16, 1861. Promoted to Adjutant (1st Lieutenant) to rank from September11, 1861. Present or accounted for until appointed Captain to rank from August 9, 1862, and transferred to Company F., 59th Regiment N.C. State Troops (4th Regiment N.C. Cavalry.)

Previously served as Adjutant with the rank of 1st Lieutenant on the Field and Staff of the 8th Regiment N.C. State Troops. Resigned that position upon appointment to Captain of this company to rank from August 9, 1862. Present or accounted for through October 1864. Admitted to the hospital at Petersburg, Va., April 1, 1865 with a gunshot wound and died the same day.

I feel those are the hardest deaths to accept on either said. Not that those dying earlier in the war were any easier.
